Birchalls Launceston
The future of the Birchalls building is here.
If you have lived in Launceston any time in the last century, you would know that this building has been an iconic feature in the Brisbane Street Mall. You would also know that it’s been lying dormant far too long.
Birchalls Launceston is the project. The heritage façade is staying intact.
The hero of the project is creating a north and south connection via the public Birchalls Laneway on the ground floor, forming a link between the mall and the rear carpark. This laneway will be activated by food & bev. Brought to life with numerous small food hawkers and adjacent the lane will be two mall fronting tenancies along with much needed central amenities (a fancy term for public toilets and a parent’s room).
The upper level of the historical Birchalls building will be transformed to best practice contemporary office space and the rear into a brand new four storey development bringing 21 inner-city apartments to the heart of the CBD

Activation at it's core
This project is more than just giving the building a much-needed facelift – it’s about activating the Launceston CBD and bringing life back to our mall.
In addition to 21 inner-city apartments and commercial and retail tenancies, Birchalls Launceston is constructing a small playground to live in the mall. This will be built before the main project is complete and will remain a permanent fixture afterwards. There may be some sneaky food available nearby to temporarily activate the space.
Birchalls Laneway will initiate a much-needed relationship between north and south, connecting the mall to the rear carpark. Birchalls Laneway will host a number of food & bev tenancies as well as central amenities for the community’s benefit.
